Back to school list: Pencils? Check. Shoes? Check. Vaccines? Double-check.

Is your family up to date on vaccines?

August is National Immunization Awareness Month. It’s the perfect time to make sure your family is up to date before the back-to-school rush. You have the power to protect your family against serious diseases, like:

Vaccination is your best protection. Even if some diseases aren’t making people sick here, they may be common elsewhere. People travel often. It’s easy for diseases to hitch a ride back with them. That’s why we need community immunity.

What about the new MMR law?

A new law went into effect July 28 that will boost our community immunity. It removes the personal and philosophical exemptions for MMR vaccine for students in public and private schools and childcare. The law requires workers and volunteers at childcare centers to prove they received the MMR vaccine or show proof of immunity. Uninsured staff and volunteers can get the vaccine for free at certain Safeway stores. See the state Department of Health’s website for more information.

What can I do?

You should talk to your doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional to make sure your family is up to date. Visit CDC’s vaccine guide for information on the vaccines recommended during pregnancy and throughout your child’s life.

Back to school

As your children head back to school, make sure vaccination is at the top of your list! August is also a great time to make sure parents and caregivers are current on vaccines.Use CDC’s adult assessment tool to see which you need.
