Leak Fix May Cause Brown Water at Food Establishments

The potentially affected area includes an estimated 50 food service establishments. Any food service establishments will need to take steps if they notice brown water.

At about 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, Tacoma Water will shift its water feed from the Alaska Street line to the Hilltop, Stadium, and Downtown areas (see map) so they can isolate the leaking pipe and fix it. As a result, water will change directions in the pipes and Tacoma Water customers—including any of the area’s up to 50 food service establishments—could see discoloration and sediment for about a day.

Customers are most likely to see discolored or cloudy water:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 24, 9 p.m. to midnight.
  • Thursday, Oct. 25, 5-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m.

Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department wants food service establishments to take these steps during this brown water advisory event:

  • Suspend dishwashing and produce washing activities until the water runs clear.
  • Turn off all ice machines, soda machines, espresso machines, and other equipment that draws water during use.

After the advisory is lifted:

  • Run all faucets for 5-10 minutes until the water runs clear
  • Discard all ice in the ice machine. Make another batch and discard the ice.
  • Flush lines that carry water – soda machines, espresso machines, and other equipment.
  • Drain and refill the dishwasher.

Follow this guidance to provide your customers with the best dining experience and to protect your equipment.

Food service establishments should call (253) 798-6460 or email with any questions.
