Life’s better when you quit tobacco.

Improve your health today. Quit smoking or vaping.

Today is Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action, a campaign for tobacco-free youth. The movement encourages youth to speak up against tobacco use. Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable death. Quitting tobacco is one of the best things you can do for your health.

An epidemic that can cause long-term harm.

Youth vaping is so widespread, former U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams declared it an epidemic. Make no mistake, vaping is harmful. Vape products contain nicotine just like cigarettes. This is especially harmful for young people because nicotine affects brain development, which can continue until age 25.

The latest Washington Healthy Youth Survey shows increases in vapor product use, which includes e-cigarettes. Students in 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades answer questions about health behavior.

When asked if they used vapor products in the past 30 days, here’s how many older Pierce County students said yes:

  • For 10th grade—23% in 2018, compared to 14% in 2016.
  • For 12th grade—30% in 2018, compared to 18% in 2016.

What can you do?

Quit tobacco today. When you stop smoking, your body immediately starts repairing itself. According to the American Cancer Society, 20 minutes after your last cigarette your heart rate and blood pressure drop. One month later the tiny hairs in your lungs called cilia start to heal. Cilia clear mucus from your lungs. They help your body fight off infection.

Coughing helps your body clear infection. If your cilia aren’t working well, mucus can build up in your lungs. Quitting smoking also reduces inflammation in your body.
