Vaccine is your best defense against COVID-19 variants—even if you’ve had the virus.

Have you had COVID-19? Some people are choosing not to get vaccinated because they had the virus and feel protected. But Dr. Mike Myint with MultiCare and other medical professionals warn that’s a dangerous decision.

“People who’ve had COVID-19 infection before are only partially protected from the wild type or the original form of COVID-19,” Dr. Myint said. “Those people are not well-protected from some of the newer variants that are much more infectious and potentially can make you more sick.”

Dr. Myint is the physician executive for MultiCare. He helps keep the healthcare system on top of the latest COVID-19 developments during the pandemic. We interviewed him last month, just as the Delta variant was beginning to spread more widely in Pierce County. It’s now the dominant strain in our state.

“Vaccinations work best when a large part of our communities are protected,” he said. “Vaccines create a protective ring around those individuals in the community who either cannot get the shot for medical reasons or are immunocompromised.”
