    Health Impact Assessments

An important step to protect public health.

A health impact assessment (HIA) can be a helpful tool for proposed projects, policies, or programs that may significantly impact public health. The Health Department may decide to conduct an HIA, or a local municipality, planner, or other entity may commission an HIA and pay the Health Department to conduct it.

HIAs inform decision-makers and the public of the potential health outcomes—both beneficial and harmful—of a proposed project, policy, or program. They provide recommendations to increase potential benefits and reduce potential harm.

HIAs offer helpful guidance, but they can’t stop permit approval or reverse previous permitting decisions.

    Why conduct an HIA?

HIAs offer a pathway to better health outcomes. They study the potential effects on social determinants of health like:

    • Exposure to pollution.
    • Stable and healthy housing.
    • Education.
    • Access to nutritious foods.
    • Safe places to walk and roll.

When we understand these potential affects, we can help decision-makers create better health outcomes for everyone.

    How long do HIAs take?

An HIA can take 2 weeks to 12 months to complete. The length of time depends on how many health topics we study and how much community engagement we conduct.

    How do we involve community?

We collect community feedback through surveys, open houses, and advisory group meetings. Community feedback allows participants to:

    • Contribute valuable insight and perspectives from their communities.
    • Ensure the HIA reflects their needs.
