  • Tacoma Smelter Plume: What Areas Are Most Affected?

Any property in the plume can have elevated levels of arsenic and lead in soil.

The former ASARCO copper smelter in Ruston, WA operated for almost 100 years. Wind blew pollution from the smelter’s smokestack throughout the Puget Sound region, which landed on our soils. Affected areas of Pierce County include:

    • Ruston.
    • North and West Tacoma.
    • University Place.
    • Fircrest.
    • Lakewood.
    • Steilacoom.
    • Tillicum.
    • DuPont.
    • Parts of Gig Harbor, Fox Island, Anderson Island and Ft. Lewis.
