    When and why we close

    A food establishment must close when we find an issue that is a significant public health danger. If they can’t immediately fix the issue, they must close to prevent illness or injury. You can find reports online after 24 hours.

    Most establishments quickly reopen after they fix the problem. Closure for repeated violations is rare.

    Reasons for closure

    • Fire.
    • Flood.
    • Extended lack of power or water.
    • Sewage backup.
    • Misuse of dangerous chemicals.
    • Apparent foodborne illness outbreak.
    • Very unsanitary conditions.
    • Lack of refrigeration.
    • Repeated high score (100 or more red points) on a routine inspection.
    • Repeated critical violations.
    • Owner/manager interferes with inspector doing their job.
    • Not operating as approved.
    • No operating permit.
    • Lack of employee restroom.
    • Lack of handwashing facilities.
    • Unapproved food sources.
