Dr. Jay Miller will serve as our Health Officer

Director of Public Health Chantell Harmon Reed appointed Dr. Jay Miller as the Health Officer for Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. He will start May 13.

  • As Health Officer, Dr. Miller will serve as the medical expert for our agency.
  • He will:
    • Assess community health.
    • Provide direction and guidance on public health matters.
    • Advise public health professionals, residents, county leadership, and the Board of Health.
  • Dr. Miller previously worked as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • He is currently a Regional Medical Officer for Washington State Department of Health.

Mind, body, and maternal health for Black Maternal Health Week.

In Pierce County, Black babies under 1 year of age die at about double the rate of white babies. April 11-17 is Black Maternal Health Week.

  • We take this week to reflect, and to reenergize our commitment to improving Black maternal health.
  • Mental health conditions are one of the leading causes of death in pregnancy.
  • A birthing parent’s ability to care for themselves and their infant after birth is a key factor in maternal health. 
  • Many Black parents experience things like:
    • Discrimination.
    • Racism.
    • Sexism.
